Worst-in-Generation Drought Dims U.S. Farm Economy Hopes
20 July 2012
US Pecan prices look like they will be on the rise from a stifling drought.
A worst-in-a-generation drought from Indiana to Arkansas to California is damaging crops and rural economies and threatening to drive food prices to record levels. Agriculture, though a small part of the $15.5 trillion U.S. economy, had been one of the most resilient industries in the past three years as the country struggled to recover from the recession.
“It might be a $50 billion event for the economy as it blends into everything over the next four quarters,” said Michael Swanson, agricultural economist at Wells Fargo & Co. (WFC) in Minneapolis, the largest commercial agriculture lender. “Instead of retreating from record highs, food prices will advance.”

New study shows that almonds have 20% fewer calories that originally thought
17 July 2012
A study conducted by scientists from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and released in the August issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (AJCN) provides a new understanding of almonds' calorie count, showing that whole almonds provide about 20 per cent fewer calories than originally thought.
At first glance, the study results beg the question, how can a food's calorie count suddenly change when the composition of the food itself hasn't?
The answer is that David Baer, PhD, and his team from the USDA's Agricultural Research Service (ARS) used a new method of measuring the calories in almonds, which built on traditional methods and allowed the researchers to determine the number of calories from almonds that are actually absorbed during digestion.
Resulting data showed a 28-gram serving of almonds (about 23 almonds) has 129 calories versus the 160 calories currently listed on food package labels.

Australian tree nut industry to crack $1 billion in value
18 April 2012
Australian tree nut exports are set to exceed $750 million within eight years, according to a report developed by the Australian Nut Industry Council.
The report, Australia’s Nut Industry - Growing for Success, also predicted that the tree nut industry will reach $1 billion in farmgate value within the same period - effectively doubling its value. Almond production is also set to double by 2014, while macadamia and walnut production continues with strong growth.
According to the Australian Nut Industry Council (ANIC) Chair Richard Sampson Genest, the industry’s expansion had “slipped under the radar” partly due to the time required from planting to first nut harvest - which can take up to eight years.
“We are now seeing the years of hard work and significant capital investment come to fruition, placing the Australian tree nut industry in a commanding position to capitalise on the growing demand for nuts both locally and overseas,” Genest said.
Local sales have increased by 50% since 2007 and world demand is increasing at 4% each year, “led by the increasing prosperity in developing economies such as India, China, Eastern Europe and the Middle East”, said Genest. The tree nut industry will become Australia’s largest horticulture exporter in 2013.
“The tree nut industry is a stand-out within Australian horticulture with a global reputation for driving innovation, value-adding and growth,” Genest said.
“The ability of our growers to produce high-quality yields in some of the poorest soils in the world has grabbed international attention. Growers are achieving this with lower costs and outstanding water efficiency.”

Technology turns pecans into high-grade oil, defatted flour
17 April 2012
The technology may be there to turn pecans into high-grade oil and defatted gluten-free flour.
As prices soar for pecans in the US, few growers will want to divert their crop into the processing sector for research.
Fortunately Stahmann Farms of La Mesa, N.M was able to ship pecans for the Oklahoma State University to study.

Walnuts May Improve Learning and Memory Functions
12 March 2012
According to a new study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, increased consumption of polyphenol-rich foods, such as walnuts, olive oil, wine and coffee, is associated to better memory function and global cognition in elderly people.
The aim of the study was to examine the relationship between the intake of antioxidant-rich foods, polyphenols in particular, from the Mediterranean diet, and cognitive performance in elderly subjects at high cardiovascular risk.
Dr. Emilio Ros, Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, Spain, along with his team and researchers from the Spanish Health Institute Carlos III, and the Universities of Barcelona, Valencia and Navarra, evaluated 447 participants aged 55-80 years from the PREDIMED study.
The study showed that intake of walnuts, one of the best sources of antioxidants and omega 3 fatty acids, was linked to better working memory. The PREDIMED study will help assess the potential of the Med diet, including tree nuts, in reducing the incidence of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s.
PREDIMED is a long-term nutritional intervention study aimed to assess the efficacy of the Mediterranean diet in the primary prevention of cardiovascular diseases. The main objective is to evaluate whether the Med diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil or tree nuts prevents cardiovascular diseases (cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction and/or stroke), by comparison with a low-fat diet.

Georgia pecan farmers hiring security guards to protect against pecan thieves
25 November 2011
As world prices of Pecans soar, people in the US are getting desperate for their favourite nut. Farmers in Georgia are hiring security guards to patrol the farms to stop thieves from making off with thousands of dollars worth of pecans. On one farm so far 160 people have been caught in the act, which they describe as “an all-day hassle ...You'll pull into a pecan grove and they'll have a 10-foot extension ladder trying to shake the pecans loose with poles. It's bad."

Walnuts can improve inferential reasoning in young adults
4 November 2011
Walnuts can increase inferential reasoning in young adults according to a new study published in the British Journal of Nutrition. Researchers from Andrews University in Michigan aimed at determining the effect of walnut consumption on verbal and non-verbal reasoning, memory and mood. In their study, a total of 64 college students were randomly assigned to two treatment sequences in a crossover fashion: walnuts-placebo or placebo-walnuts for 8 weeks. After 6 weeks of washout, the intervention groups followed the diets in reverse order. Participants performed a number of cognitive tests. Although no significant increases were detected for mood, non-verbal reasoning or memory on the walnut-supplemented diet, inferential verbal reasoning increased significantly. Inference is described as the ability to designate the degree of accuracy of conclusions that have been drawn from certain facts.

A University of Georgia researcher was awarded a $1.2 million federal grant to study the nutritional benefits of pecans and offer those findings to help promote the nuts, which are fetching record prices thanks to exploding demand in China and other markets overseas.
The grant will fund research by UGA food science professor Ronald Pegg, who is working to expound on studies that suggest eating pecans may help protect against heart disease. He also is looking into antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and other benefits that may be unique to pecans.

Equity shift sees senior managers take a stake in Stahmann Farms
11 April 2011
Nearly 30 per cent of the company’s equity is now divided amongst three key management personnel - Kevin Norman, Ross Burling and Richard Genest. This equity shift was engineered to share risk, increase reward, build continuity, and provide long-term stability to the company.
Stahmann Farms started out as a family enterprise, and still bears the founders name. For directors Jeff Dodd and Matthew Durack this sense of family has remained fundamental.
Mr Durack says, “Our long-term intent was always to pursue other equity partners to help growth, and particularly to target quality people who bring an everyday commitment to making us better and more successful”.
Mr Dodd also welcomes the three new company shareholders, saying there are no secrets about the challenges for Australia’s nut industry in recent years: water availability, currency fluctuations and a shortage of capital.
“I’m very optimistic about this business and the tree nut industry at large, based on continuing global demand for kernel on the back of first world demand for healthy products and Chinese demand for just about anything.
“The signal in this agreement is very clear and very positive for Stahmann Farms. We have great product, a strong brand, market presence and – most importantly - excellent people.”
