Deane Stahmann Jr. passes the torch…

On the 29th of April 2008 Stahmann Farms’ CEO Matthew Durack and Factory General Manager Jeff Dodd, both long-term employees of the company, reached an agreement with Deane Stahmann to take over its Australian assets.

This changing of the guard marks the end of an era which began in 1965 when Deane arrived in Australia with a plan that saw him plant more than 70,000 pecan trees on 1,800 acres of rich, alluvial soil on the Moree plain. That property, Trawalla, which now yields as many as 3,000 tonnes of nuts each year stands as a living testimony to his vision and determination.

Matthew began work with the company in July 1987 as Farm Manager at Trawalla, and was succeeded in that role some four years later by Jeff. Both have remained close to Deane ever since and have held various management positions within the company over the years.

Whilst Deane and his wife Helen are renowned and successful business leaders in the Toowoomba region, their three daughters, who all studied in the USA, elected to settle back in their parents’ homeland, and so the prospect of family succession for Stahmann Farms faded. Instead, Deane turned to old friends who know the business well, and cherish the vision which has been realised over four decades of toil.

Now formally known as Stahmann Farms Enterprises, Australia’s foremost pecan company is also leading the way in the macadamia industry and in organic farming practices. The company has embarked on a strategy of expansion within the Australian Nut Industry which will ensure that the Stahmann legacy is not only preserved but magnified in the years ahead.
